Just about 3km from Vijaydurg fort is the famous Rameshwar temple. It is a place of devotional faith. This temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Shiva. It is a historic temple built in 16th century. Like Vijaydurg fort, this temple also has historical background.
The Rameshwar temple is a couple of kilometres away from Vijaydurg, and houses the samadhi (resting place) of Tulaji Angre, one of the descendants of the brave Angre family, who were commanders of Shivaji’s fierce navy. The Rameshwar temple nestles in a valley, at the bottom of this steep incline. To reach the temple, you must walk down a long incline with sheer walls carved out of the laterite rock. Te rock faces are lined with niches to hold oil lamps. Inside the entry arch hangs the bell captured from an enemy vessel by Sardar Anandrao Dhulap (Admiral in the Peshwa navy) in 1793. The wooden art-work inside the temple is characteristic of ancient culture. Annual grand fair is held on the day of Maha Shivratri (in the Marathi month of Magha) as well as on Mondays of the Month of Shravana when a large number of devotees visit this temple. Besides other tourists on the way to Vijaydurg Fort also visit this significant temple.
