Kunkeshwar temple was built many years back. It has a stoy of irani sailor, who was travelling in the sea for trade and was near to kunkeshwar village. Suddenly a storm appeared in the sea. The sailor was a muslim. The bad atmosphere and strong winds started sinking ship into the sea. While he saw a glowing lamp on kunkeshwar beach. He prayed to that lamp “I don’t know who you are. But if you help me to get out of this bad situation, I will build a temple for you”. And suddenly atmosphere became all clear and he managed to come at the seashore without any problem. On reaching the kunkeshwar beach , he found shiv linga near the glowing lamp. So as promised he built the temple around shiv linga. After building temple, he committed suicide from the top of temple. As the sailor was a muslim, he feared his religion would not accept this.
But according to research by historians such stories were spread to protect the temple from mughal and sultan invaders. There are many such stories linked to various temples, which were created to protect ancient temples.
